Schmaltz's Alt

One of the Schell's successors, Waren, had a favorite pastime back in the 30's of going to the city dump to shoot rats–so much that it was a common date for him and his wife-to-be, Casey. The manager of the city dump was John Schmaltz–hence the nickname "Schmaltz." The brew has a rich, sweet malty flavor with hints of licorice and is balanced by a choclaty bitterness and is dark brown in color, topped by a thick, creamy tan head.

Food pairings:
This brew pairs well with German cuisine and earthy cheeses like Camembert or Fontina. It also serves as an excellent complement to both smoked and grilled meats
Schmaltz's Alt is a seasonal beer available from August Schell in the months from late November to February.
